TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Democrats delivered one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 primary season when Angie Nixon defeated U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz in the Democratic race for the Senate.

Nixon, a Democratic socialist and former Florida state representative, emerged as the party's nominee after Tuesday's primary, positioning her for the November general election.

The result is significant because Florida remains an important state in the national battle for control of Congress. The Senate race will now draw increased attention as Democrats attempt to expand their influence in Washington during the midterm elections.

Nixon's victory also reflects broader tensions within the Democratic Party over its political direction. Progressive candidates have increasingly challenged more moderate Democrats, particularly on issues including healthcare, economic inequality, housing and foreign policy.
