NEW YORK, October 14, 2026 Goldman Sachs reported stronger-than-expected third-quarter earnings, supported by a sharp increase in equities trading revenue, even as market volatility and economic uncertainty challenged Wall Street’s investment banking industry.
The financial firm reported net profit of $5.29 billion, or $17.01 per share, beating analysts’ expectations. Total revenue rose 23% year over year to $18.68 billion, according to Reuters.
Equities trading was a major driver of the results, with revenue in the division increasing 72% to $6.44 billion. Investment banking fees also rose 21% to $3.22 billion, supported by debt and equity underwriting and advisory activity.
However, the broader banking sector faces headwinds from volatile financial markets, inflation concerns, and uncertainty surrounding interest rates. Executives at major U.S. banks have also warned that market turbulence has affected some dealmaking and trading activity.
Why it matters: Goldman Sachs’ results offer an important snapshot of the U.S. financial services industry. Strong trading revenue can support bank profits during turbulent periods, but sustained performance will depend on market conditions and continued corporate deal activity.
Investors will be watching upcoming earnings reports for further signs of strength or weakness across the American banking sector.
