The Trump administration is preparing a major expansion of artificial intelligence research and computing infrastructure, with technology companies committing more than $1 billion in computing credits to support a new federal AI research initiative.
Companies including AMD, OpenAI and Anthropic are expected to contribute computing resources as Washington seeks to accelerate scientific research using advanced AI systems. The administration is also announcing a Southeast Regional AI Computing Consortium involving 10 states and a $1 billion investment in computing resources for students and faculty in Georgia.
The initiative comes as the United States faces increasing competition from China in artificial intelligence, biotechnology and other strategic technologies. The administration is also planning programs designed to encourage more Americans to pursue advanced degrees in AI, science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The push reflects a broader shift toward combining government research, private-sector AI infrastructure and university computing capacity. Supporters say greater access to advanced computing could accelerate breakthroughs, while critics remain concerned about reductions and changes in traditional federal research funding.
