President Donald Trump and leaders of several major U.S. technology companies have signed a voluntary agreement aimed at strengthening artificial intelligence safety measures.

The agreement was announced after a White House meeting with executives from OpenAI, Google, Meta, Nvidia, Anthropic and xAI. The companies agreed to introduce additional internal controls and independent reviews as they develop increasingly advanced AI systems.

The framework calls for multiple layers of oversight, including cybersecurity protections, safeguards against unauthorized access and external assessments of AI safety measures. The agreement is voluntary rather than a federal regulation.

The announcement comes as AI companies continue developing systems capable of performing increasingly complex tasks. Recent concerns about autonomous AI agents and unexpected model behavior have increased attention on how companies can monitor and control advanced systems.

Trump said the agreement could provide a framework for the industry while maintaining the pace of U.S. AI development. The White House has also indicated that additional government oversight could be considered in the future.

The new accord puts AI safety, self-regulation and U.S. technology policy at the center of the growing debate over how advanced artificial intelligence should be developed and governed.
