WASHINGTON, D.C. — Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is warning that restricting advanced Chinese artificial intelligence models may not be the best strategy for maintaining America's lead in the global AI race.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Zuckerberg argued that the United States should focus on identifying and fixing technology bottlenecks and weaknesses instead of attempting to block Chinese AI models. He said restrictions would not be an effective solution for maintaining U.S. technological leadership.

The comments arrive as Washington becomes increasingly concerned about the rapid development of Chinese AI. Beijing-based Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 model has attracted attention for its coding capabilities, intensifying debate over whether Chinese companies are independently closing the technology gap or benefiting from American AI advances.

The debate is becoming increasingly important for American technology companies. U.S. officials have warned that Chinese companies could face sanctions or restrictions on access to American technology if allegations involving intellectual-property violations are confirmed.

The Trump administration has also introduced restrictions affecting some Chinese technology imports, including robots and power inverters, citing national security concerns and the need to strengthen domestic critical industries.

Zuckerberg's position adds another voice to the debate over how Washington should respond to China's AI progress. Rather than relying primarily on restrictions, he is advocating stronger American competitiveness by addressing infrastructure, research and other obstacles that could slow U.S. AI development.

The issue also connects to the growing argument over open-source and open-weight AI models. Zuckerberg has previously supported more open AI development, while some competitors and policymakers have called for stronger controls around powerful models because of potential security risks.
