At least five people were killed and five others injured after an Amazon Prime Air cargo aircraft operated by 21 Air overran a runway while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday, September 6.

Boeing 767 Struck Vehicles

The Boeing 767-300 was operating as Prime Air Flight 7598 after departing from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The aircraft went beyond the runway at about 2 p.m. local time, crossed a nearby road and struck several vehicles before catching fire.

Three of the injured people were reported to be in critical condition, while two others were hospitalized with less serious injuries. Authorities have not yet released the identities of those killed or injured.

Emergency crews responded in large numbers, with firefighters dealing with the aircraft fire and a fuel leak while rescuers worked to reach people trapped in the cockpit and vehicles.

Federal Investigation Underway

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has sent investigators to Miami to determine what caused the runway overrun. The Federal Aviation Administration is also investigating the accident.

Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, runway conditions, weather, flight data and the circumstances surrounding the landing. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

The accident temporarily disrupted operations at one of the country's major cargo airports, causing widespread flight delays and cancellations.

The investigation could provide crucial answers about what went wrong during the landing and whether weather, runway conditions, aircraft performance or other factors contributed to the deadly crash.
