WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is preparing to convene an advisory panel in September to examine Grail's Galleri multi-cancer early-detection test, putting one of the most closely watched technologies in the emerging cancer-screening market under federal scrutiny.
Galleri is a blood test designed to search for molecular signals associated with more than 50 types of cancer from a single blood sample. The technology uses artificial intelligence to analyze biological signals that may indicate the presence of cancer.
The test is currently available as a laboratory-developed test but does not yet have FDA approval. Grail submitted regulatory data in January as it seeks authorization through the FDA's premarket review process.
The upcoming review is significant because multi-cancer early-detection tests could potentially complement traditional screening methods such as mammograms and colonoscopies.
However, questions remain about how effectively these tests improve cancer outcomes in real-world populations.
A major UK study produced mixed results. Galleri did not significantly improve overall early cancer detection in the trial, although researchers reported a reduction in stage IV diagnoses for a group of deadly cancers by the third screening round.
The distinction is important for patients and healthcare providers. Detecting a cancer signal is not necessarily the same as proving that screening reduces deaths, and regulators must evaluate whether the benefits of widespread testing outweigh potential risks such as false-positive results, unnecessary procedures and anxiety.
The FDA review could therefore have implications well beyond Grail.
If authorized, multi-cancer detection technology could become a growing part of the U.S. preventive-health market. A 2024 federal funding law also created a pathway for Medicare coverage of FDA-approved multi-cancer early-detection tests beginning in 2029 for eligible adults ages 50 to 65, adding another important dimension to the regulatory decision.
The development comes as healthcare companies increasingly combine blood-based diagnostics, artificial intelligence and molecular analysis to identify disease earlier and personalize treatment.
For patients, the biggest potential advantage is convenience: a single blood draw could potentially provide information about multiple cancer types rather than requiring separate screening strategies for each disease.
But experts and regulators will need to determine how such technology should be used alongside established screening programs.
The FDA's upcoming review could become a defining moment for the future of blood-based cancer screening in America, particularly as healthcare systems search for new ways to identify serious diseases earlier.
