LOS ANGELES — Taylor Farms has announced a voluntary recall of prepared foods containing jalapeños after concerns emerged over possible Salmonella contamination, creating a new food-safety alert for consumers across the United States.
The recalled products include items such as salsa, guacamole, sandwiches and prepared meals that were distributed through major retailers. The action follows a recall of fresh jalapeños by Coast Citrus Distributors after federal investigators identified a potential contamination source at a farm in Sinaloa, Mexico.
Federal health authorities are investigating a broader Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 345 people across 27 states, with 36 hospitalizations reported. No illnesses have been directly linked to the Taylor Farms products at the time of the recall announcement.
Taylor Farms said it has stopped sourcing jalapeños from the implicated supplier and is moving to alternative suppliers while the investigation continues.
The recalled products were distributed through several major grocery chains, meaning consumers may encounter affected items in multiple parts of the country.
The FDA has published information about the recalled products, including product details and distribution information, allowing consumers to check whether items in their refrigerators or kitchens are affected.
The development is particularly significant because Taylor Farms has also faced scrutiny related to a separate Cyclospora outbreak involving lettuce. Michigan health officials recently reported the first two U.S. deaths associated with that outbreak.
The two investigations involve different pathogens and products, but the developments have increased attention on fresh produce supply chains and food-safety controls.
For consumers, health officials generally advise checking recall notices carefully rather than relying only on product appearance or smell, because contaminated food may not look or smell spoiled.
The latest recall also highlights the complexity of America's food distribution system. A single ingredient can move through suppliers, processors, grocery stores and restaurants before a contamination concern is identified.
The Taylor Farms recall puts renewed focus on Salmonella prevention and food-safety monitoring as federal investigators work to determine the full scope of the outbreak.
