One Dead After Business Jet Crashes and Catches Fire on Texas Highway

A business jet carrying six people crashed onto a highway in Laredo, Texas, late Tuesday night, killing one person and triggering dramatic rescue efforts as bystanders rushed to help survivors escape the burning aircraft.

The aircraft, identified as a Cessna Citation business jet, went down on Loop 20 near the Texas-Mexico border shortly after 10 p.m. local time. According to airport officials, the pilot had reported mechanical problems and low fuel levels shortly before losing contact with air traffic controllers.

The jet crash-landed just a few miles from Laredo International Airport, where it had been attempting to return after experiencing difficulties during a flight bound for Austin, Texas.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as motorists stopped their vehicles and ran toward the wreckage. Videos shared on social media showed the aircraft heavily damaged, partially split apart, and engulfed in flames as rescuers worked to free those trapped inside.

Several bystanders used tools, including a sledgehammer and shovel, to break cockpit windows and help open access points to the aircraft. Emergency responders later joined the effort, battling thick smoke and intense heat while evacuating passengers from the damaged jet.

One person aboard was pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining five occupants were transported to local hospitals and were reported to be in stable condition. No civilian injuries on the ground were reported, though five police officers received treatment for smoke inhalation during rescue operations.

Witness Zayra Garza, who arrived shortly after the crash, said she watched as passengers escaped from the aircraft while flames spread through the fuselage. Firefighters eventually entered the wreckage to rescue the final passenger as emergency crews worked to contain the blaze.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the accident. Preliminary reports indicate the aircraft suffered mechanical issues before the crash, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

The incident marks the latest in a series of recent aviation tragedies across the United States. Earlier this week, a military bomber crash in California and a separate skydiving aircraft accident in Missouri also resulted in multiple fatalities.

NetJets, the private aviation company that operated the aircraft, confirmed the jet was part of its fleet and said it is cooperating fully with investigators as authorities work to determine what led to the deadly crash.
