A deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has left three children and one teacher dead, prompting grief and renewed concerns about school safety across the United States.

Authorities said the shooting occurred on Thursday, October 15, when a 16-year-old suspect forced his way into the elementary school. Police reported that the children killed were 5, 8 and 11 years old.

A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were also reported critically injured and taken to hospital. The suspected shooter was found dead inside the school after a community member confronted him, according to police.

Law enforcement agencies are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack, including whether the suspect had any connection to the school. The FBI is assisting local authorities.

Classes and school activities across the Bend-La Pine district were canceled Friday as the community began responding to the tragedy. Families were reunited with children at a designated location following the evacuation.
