U.S. senators are preparing for a congressional vote on President Donald Trump’s proposed nuclear power agreement with Saudi Arabia, with the vote expected before December 13.
The agreement entered the Senate’s formal review process on September 14, beginning a 90-day congressional review period. Senators who have raised concerns about nuclear proliferation said they expect lawmakers to vote on a resolution regarding the agreement after the November midterm elections.
The proposed deal has drawn attention because senators have questioned whether it would place sufficient restrictions on uranium enrichment and nuclear fuel reprocessing by Saudi Arabia. The issue could become an important part of congressional oversight of U.S.-Saudi nuclear cooperation.
Under the congressional review process, lawmakers have until December 13 to consider the agreement. The upcoming vote will provide Congress with an opportunity to publicly debate the terms of the proposed nuclear cooperation arrangement.
