The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture is marking its 10th anniversary with a four-day celebration in Washington, D.C., beginning September 24.
The celebration, called “The Reunion,” runs through September 27 and brings together visitors, community partners, supporters and museum guests to recognize a decade of preserving and sharing African American history and culture. The program is built around the theme “Welcome Home: Our Legacy Continues.”
The museum opened to the public in 2016 after years of planning and construction. Its 10th-anniversary events are designed to highlight the stories, achievements and cultural experiences represented through its collections and exhibitions.
The anniversary comes during a major year for American cultural institutions, as the United States marks its 250th anniversary. The Smithsonian has been organizing programs across its museums that explore American history, communities and cultural heritage.
The museum's anniversary celebration provides visitors with an opportunity to reflect on African American heritage, history, art and community experiences while looking ahead to the institution's next decade.
