New symposium will examine how giving, community support and philanthropy have shaped American life.
WASHINGTON — September 21, 2026 — The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History is preparing to host a major cultural program examining the history of American philanthropy as the country marks its 250th anniversary.
The “Power of Giving” symposium is scheduled for September 23 in Washington, bringing together Smithsonian curators, historians and philanthropy experts to discuss how charitable giving and community support have influenced American society over the past 250 years.
The program will explore several themes, including women and philanthropy, African American philanthropic history, cultural philanthropy and America’s civic future. Organizers say the discussions will look at how Americans’ contributions of money, time and expertise have helped shape communities and institutions.
The Smithsonian has been expanding its America 250 cultural programming throughout 2026. Its National Museum of American History is also presenting exhibitions and events examining different aspects of the country's history and cultural development.
The symposium will be held at the museum’s Warner Bros. Theater and will also be available through livestreaming. The event is free, with registration required.
The program adds another major cultural event to Washington’s 2026 calendar as museums and cultural institutions continue marking the nation’s 250th anniversary.
