US Forces Intercept Iranian Drones Targeting Commercial Ships in Strait of Hormuz, CENTCOM Says
U.S. military forces intercepted and destroyed multiple Iranian one-way attack drones that were reportedly targeting commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). The incident comes at a critical moment as Washington and Tehran appear to be moving closer to a potential agreement aimed at ending months of conflict.
In a statement posted on social media, CENTCOM said Iran launched several attack drones toward commercial ships navigating the strategic waterway. U.S. forces responded by shooting down all of the drones, ensuring that maritime traffic continued without disruption.
“The international trade corridor remains open for transit,” CENTCOM said, emphasizing that shipping operations through the Strait of Hormuz remain unaffected despite heightened regional tensions.
The U.S. assessment contrasts sharply with statements from Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), which announced a day earlier that the strait would be closed until further notice due to escalating tensions involving American military activity in the region.
Hostilities intensified earlier this week after Iranian forces reportedly downed a U.S. Army AH-64 Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz. The helicopter’s two crew members were later rescued by an unmanned U.S. Navy surface vessel.
Despite the recent clashes, both Washington and Tehran have indicated that negotiations toward a ceasefire and broader agreement are progressing. Reports suggest that a proposed memorandum of understanding could restore full shipping access through the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the United States easing restrictions on Iranian ports.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy corridors, carrying roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies. Any disruption to traffic through the passage has significant implications for global energy markets and fuel prices.
As diplomatic efforts continue, the latest drone incident highlights the fragile security situation in the region and the challenges facing both sides as they seek a path toward de-escalation.
