Hawk Fire Threatens Reno as Evacuations Expand

RENO, Nevada — A rapidly spreading wildfire near Reno has triggered a major emergency, with authorities ordering approximately 42,000 residents to evacuate and placing another 45,000 people under evacuation warnings.

The Hawk Fire, which began Saturday near the Hawk Meadow Trail, expanded rapidly under strong winds, low humidity and warm conditions. By Sunday, the blaze had burned roughly 13,000 acres and remained uncontained.

At least six people, including three civilians and three first responders, have been injured. Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and authorized additional resources, including National Guard support and helicopters.

Authorities have said the fire was human-caused, although the specific circumstances remain under investigation. Officials are urging residents in affected areas to follow evacuation orders immediately as changing winds could make the fire's behavior unpredictable.

The fast-moving blaze has become one of the most significant wildfire emergencies in Nevada this summer, putting homes, businesses and critical infrastructure around Reno under intense pressure.
